MANILA, Philippines – Four people were injured in a blast in Lamitan City, Basilan on Sunday, May 5, when an explosive device was reportedly thrown towards the house of incumbent mayor Roderick Furigay.

Furigay, who is also the Liberal Party vice mayoral candidate, said he was in a meeting with campaign coordinators at 10 pm when the explosion occurred.

A similar attack happened in April, but it was conducted against incumbent vice mayor Arleigh Eisma, rival of Furigay’s wife, Rosita. Both are running for the mayoral post in the 2013 elections.

Prior to this, Furigay’s brother, Henry was shot by unidentified men along with his driver Bernard Cuevas and a supporter. Henry’s son, councilor Hegem Furigay, is also running against Rosita. – Rappler.com
