Maguindanao mayoral bet ambushed, nephew killed

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A convoy carrying a mayoral candidate in South Upi town in Maguindanao were ambushed in North Upi on Saturday afternoon, May 11.

It was, however, still unclear if the mayoral bet, Vice Mayor Baba Omar was hurt, but his nephew, Kiang Nasser, died in the ambush.

A certain Turno Omar was wounded.

Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the military’s 6th Infantry Division, said the convoy was in the vicinity of Kilometer 30 at around 5:30 p.m. when they were waylaid and fired upon.

Authorities are still conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators and the mastermind.

The victims were brought to the Datu Blah Sinsuat. 

Vice Mayor Datu Baba Omar is running under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) in the seven-way mayoral race in South Upi.

His rivals include Abdullah “Bedz” Campong (Liberal Party), Samson Garcia (AKSYON), Elsie Travilla (Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino) and independent candidates Imelda Estorninos, Jude Martin and Israel Sinsuat. –
