MANILA, Philippines – Liberal Party mayoral candidate Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco Salazar is leading over Nacionalista Party candidate Erico Basilio Fabian in the 2013 elections. Latest unofficial results on Tuesday morning, May 14, show she has 92,241 votes versus Fabian’s 15,089.
Zamboanga City has a voting population of 405,601.
If Climaco-Salazar wins, she replaces incumbent Mayor Celso Lobregat of the LDP.
The local chapters of the LP and LDP are part of a coalition that includes the Adelante Zamboanga Party headed by Lobregat.
Climaco earlier said she wanted to strengthen family relations, protect the rights of women and children, provide education for the youth, promote green living, and maintain peace and order. Similarly, Fabian said he wanted to push for a safe and secure city by taking a strong position against criminality in all forms.
The city has been caught in the middle of discussions about the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro. Local officials were thankful the city was excluded from the Bangsamoro geographical structure.
Climaco-Salazar said she supports the peace agreement between the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. – Rappler.com
