Kid Peña cries electoral fraud, plans protest vs Abby Binay

MANILA, Philippines – Defeated Makati mayoral candidate Romulo "Kid" Peña Jr is set to file an electoral protest against Second District Representative Abigail Binay, who beat him by more than 18,000 votes.

"Bukas ng umaga kami po ay magfa-file ng protesta nang sa gayon malaman ninyo na patuloy nagbabaga ang apoy sa lungsod ng Makati (Tomorrow morning, we will file a protest so people will see that the fire in Makati is still burning)," said Peña before around a thousand of his supporters gathered outside city hall on Thursday, May 19.

In an interview with reporters, Peña said they have photos and other documentary evidence proving their vote-buying claims against Abby, whose family has been running Makati since 1986, when Vice President Jejomar Binay first became local chief executive.

"Pero kasi, sa dami ng klase ng ifa-file namin, ngayon pa lang magha-huddle kung alin dun 'yung pinaka[puwede] – protest ba, iba iba eh, depende rin sa may salaysay [na nakuha namin]," said Peña.

(But we're only going to huddle tonight to discuss what we will ultimately file. We have a lot of testimonies.)

Abby was proclaimed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the early hours of May 10. She got 160,320 votes while Peña received 142,257. Art director Jimmy Jumawan only managed to get 1,823 votes. (READ: 3 bets for Makati mayor: What do Binay, Jumawan, Peña promise?)

Second protest

This is the second time Peña's camp and his supporters cried electoral fraud against Abby. They previously rallied on May 12 and claimed that there were anomalies because Peña lost in District 2, his supposed bailiwick.

According to Barangay Cembo Kagawad Pet Vera, they would need around P10 million should Peña decide to push through with his demand for a recount of the votes.

On Thursday, Peña's camp was also leading a "Piso Para sa Pagbabago for Manual Recount" drive among the supporters, who took turns dropping money in empty bottles being passed around during the program.

Supporters were calling the Binays "mga magnanakaw (thieves)" as program hosts egged them on.

They also cheered for president-elect Rodrigo Duterte, who swept the polls in Metro Manila except in Makati, where VP Binay won as president.

No truth?

Abby's camp slammed Peña's claims, saying the people of Makati have already decided.

"We will wait for their formal protest and evaluate their evidence, assuming they have any," VP Binay's communications director Joey Salgado told Rappler.

Abby's lawyer Claro Certeza also said there is no truth to Peña's accusations.

"Ang eleksyon sa Makati ay malinis. Ito ay isinagawa ng Comelec sa ilalim ng administrasyon ni Kid Peña. Ang mga tao sa city hall na nangasiwa sa pagganap ng eleksyon ay tao ni Kid Peña," said Certeza.

(The elections in Makati were clean. This was done by the Comelec under Kid Peña's administration. The people under city hall who oversaw it were employees of Kid Peña.)

"Paano siya dadayain ng mga Binay na wala sa poder noong panahon na iyon?" he asked.

(How can the Binays cheat if they're not the ones in power at the time?)

Abby's slate in Makati under the United Nationalist Alliance was victorious in the city, too.

Her husband, businessman Luis Campos, won as Second District representative. First District Representative Monique Lagdameo is now the vice mayor, while Councilor Monsour del Rosario also won the congressional seat for District 1.

Most of the winning city councilors are also from UNA.

Abby is now the 4th Binay to sit in city hall, with her parents VP Binay and Dra Elenita Sombillo-Binay, and brother Junjun previously being elected Makati mayor.

Junjun was dismissed last year over the alleged overpricing of the Makati City Hall Parking Building II and is now facing criminal charges. – Rappler.com
