MANILA, Philippines – Elections are around the corner once again, as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) started receiving certificates of candidacy (COC) on Thursday, October 11.

Local Comelec offices accommodated the initial batch of aspirants to more than 18,000 positions. (LIVE UPDATES: Filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2019 elections)

Here is a list of notable local bets on the first day of COC filing on Thursday, as reported by Rappler and various news organizations. 


In Cagayan, Alvaro Antonio attempts to stage a comeback as governor under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) banner. His running mate is incumbent Vice Governor Melvin Vargas Jr.

Antonio served as Cagayan governor from 2007 to 2016. His daughter Cristina lost to current Governor Manuel Mamba in the 2016 polls.

In Isabela, 3rd District Representative Napoleon Dy seeks to replace his brother, 3rd-term governor Faustino Dy III, at the provincial hall.

Mayor Ian Paul Dy of Alicia town will run for Congress to succeed his father Napoleon. Vice Mayor Joel Alejandro then filed his COC for mayor of Alicia.

In Laguna, former journalist Sol Aragones will seek a 3rd and final term as congresswoman of the 3rd district of Laguna.

Metro Manila 

The race for Quezon City's top posts got off to a hot start on Thursday.

Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte filed her COC to run for mayor, reported ABS-CBN News. Her running mate, 3rd District Councilor Gian Sotto, filed his candidacy for vice mayor.

Then, shortly after lunch, former representative Ismael "Chuck" Mathay III filed his candidacy for mayor. Actor and 2nd District Councilor Roderick Paulate* will be Mathay's running mate.

Meanwhile, Quezon City 6th District Representative Jose Christopher Belmonte was an early bird in filing his COC for reelection.

In Negros Occidental, Representative Juliet Marie Ferrer of the 4th district will be running for reelection.

Meanwhile, former vice governor and ex-representative Genaro Alvarez Jr will seek to reclaim his 6th district seat in Congress.
