MANILA, Philippines – Recent national surveys showed that presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio is in the Magic 12 of the Senate race if elections were held today, but she opted to stay in the city instead.

She filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) to run for reelection on Monday, October 15. (READ: Sara Duterte seeks reelection as Davao City mayor)

Here are other local bets who are gunning to win key posts in the May 2019 midterm elections, as reported by Rappler and other news organizations. (LIVE UPDATES: Filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2019 elections)


In Ifugao, Teodoro "Teddy" Baguilat Jr, who is on his final term as congressman, filed his COC for governor. 

A member of the Liberal Party, Baguilat was first elected to Congress in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Villafuertes are looking to extend their terms in Camarines Sur.

Three generations of the political dynasty – all reelectionists – filed their COCs on Monday, reported ABS-CBN News: Luis Villafuerte for congressman of Camarines Sur's 3rd district, Luis Raymund Villafuerte for 2nd district representative, and Miguel Villafuerte for governor.

The youngest Villafuerte's running mate is ex-vice governor Imelda Papin. Joining their ticket is actor and comedian Long Mejia, who is running for congressman of the 1st district.

Metro Manila

In Quezon City, a 3rd tandem is joining the race for city hall.

Congressman Vincent "Bingbong" Crisologo of the 1st district filed his candidacy for mayor, reported the Philippine Star. 

His running mate is lawyer Jopet Sison, who co-hosts the TV show Ipaglaban Mo with his father, veteran lawyer Jose Sison.

Crisologo and Sison will go up against the two other pairs who have declared their bids for the city's top posts: Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte and Councilor Gian Sotto, and ex-congressman Ismael Mathay III and Councilor Roderick Paulate.

The firebrand Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will be seeking reelection in 2019.

His running mate, Councilor Mary Ann delos Santos, also filed her COC on Monday, added SunStar Cebu in its report.
