No less than President Rodrigo Duterte is presiding over the national assembly of ruling party PDP-Laban on Saturday, July 17, where members will elect new officials and likely oust Senator Manny Pacquiao as party president.
Once a loyal Duterte ally, Pacquiao is now the President’s enemy. He is one of the leading presidential bets in a recent survey, and is expected to compete with the President’s daughter Sara in the 2022 race to succeed Duterte.
A day before the national assembly, the anti-Pacquiao faction of PDP-Laban, led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, held a national council meeting in an early show of force.
