WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

From October 1 to 8, 2021, aspirants for local positions will be filing their certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the 2022 Philippine elections. More than 18,000 positions in the provincial down to the municipal governments will be up for grabs across the country. 

In Mindanao, they are running in 27 provinces, 33 cities, and 422 municipalities.

LANAO DEL SUR: Former special envoy, group file COCs, challenge Adiongs

Former special envoy for Islamic Affairs Ameroddin “Abu Mohammad” Sarangani led a group of imams in challenging the leadership of the Adiong political family in Lanao del Sur.

Sarangani, himself a respected Islamic scholar, filed his certificate of candidacy for governor under the Ummah Party before the Lanao del Sur provincial office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday, October 7. Read the full story.

COTABATO: Vice Governor Mendoza files COC for governor

Incumbent Cotabato Vice Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for governor in Amas, Kidapawan City, on Wednesday, October 6. She will be running under the Nacionalista Party.

Mendoza is the eldest child of Carmen Mayor Rogelio Taliño and former mayor Noemi Taliño. She is the wife of TUCP Representative Raymond Democrito Mendoza.

She was accompanied by her running mate Shirlyn Macasarte-Villanueva, who also filed her COC for vice governor, and 3rd District board members Jonathan Tabara, Joemar Cerebo, and Ivy Dalumpines. 

Her daughter Samantha Taliño Santos also filed her COC for a congressional seat in the 3rd District.

MAGUINDANAO: Former Shariff Aguak vice mayor seeks mayoral post

Former Shariff Aguak vice mayor Datu Akmad “Mitra” Ampatuan is running for mayor in the 2022 polls. He and other members of his family filed their certificates of candidacy on Wednesday, October 6.

He is also the father of the current mayor and vice mayoral candidate, Marop Ampatuan.

Akmad resigned from his post in 2020 due to health issues and was succeeded by his son, Sangguniang Bayan hopeful Amir Akmad.

Akmad was a former ally of Maguindanao Massacre mastermind, the late Andal Ampatuan Sr. He later testified against his relatives in the Maguindanao Massacre case. (READ: Vice mayor who testified in Ampatuan massacre ambushed in Maguindanao)

DAVAO CITY: Councilor Campos files for reelection

Augusto Javier “Javi” Garcia Campos, Davao City 2nd District Councilor, filed his certificate of candidacy for reelection on Wednesday, October 6.

The young councilor came from a long line of Davaoeño politicians beginning from his great-grandfather and former city Councilor Leon Garcia His other relatives include his aunt Congresswoman Mylene Garcia, his uncle Vincent Garcia, and his grandfather former Congressman Manuel Garcia.

BASILAN: Tuburan Mayor Durie Kallahal runs for provincial board

Tuburan Mayor Durie Kallahal, who is on his last term, filed his certificate of candidacy for provincial board member.

Kallahal, who has been a politician for over 20 years, said he would prioritize the promotion of peace and order, and a genuine solution to family feuds or rido in the province.

LANAO DEL SUR: 2 former assemblymen fight for congressional post

Former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao assemblyman Farouk “Froxy” Macarambon Jr. is running for congressman in the 2nd District of Lanao del Sur.

Senator Manny Pacquiao’s sister-in-law is running for mayor of General Santos City.

Labangal Barangay Chairperson Lorelie Pacquiao filed her certificate of candidacy on Wednesday, October 6, at the local Commission on Elections office.

Pacquiao is the wife of OFW FAMILY Representative Bobby Pacquiao, a former boxer like his brother.

Lorelie ran for vice mayor of General Santos City in 2019 but lost to lawyer Loreto Acharon, who is now her party mate in the People’s Champ Movement.

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY: Congresswoman Hofer runs for governor vs Palma’s son

Zamboanga Sibugay 2nd District Representative Dulce Ann Hofer is attempting to win the province’s governorship again, a position that eluded her in 2010.

She filed her certificate of candidacy before the local Commission on Elections past noon on Wednesday, October 6.

Hofer, who is serving her last term as a congresswoman, will be running against the son of Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Wilter Palma.

Palma’s son and namesake Wilter II is the representative of the province’s 1st District.

Hofer also comes from a political family – her late father George is the founding governor of Zamboanga Sibugay.

The 54-year-old Hofer first served as a representative of the 2nd District for one term, then ran for governor in 2010, hoping to succeed her father who ended his three consecutive terms that year.

She lost to Rommel Jalosjos but reclaimed her congressional post in 2013.

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY: Cabilao’s daughter faces governor in congressional race

A scion of a political family in Zamboanga Sibugay is running for congresswoman in the province’s 1st District against Governor Wilter Palma.

Ma. Florence Cabilao Yambao filed her certificate of candidacy before the provincial office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday morning, October 6.

Yambao, a physician by profession, is the daughter of former congresswoman Belma Cabilao, who served in the province’s then lone district from 2001 to 2007.

The son of Zamboanga Sibugay’s first governor wants to succeed his sister as representative of the province’s 2nd District.

Businessman George Hofer II filed his certificate of candidacy before the provincial office of the Commission on Elections on Wednesday, October 6.
