2022 elections could be last hurrah for Lacson-Sotto
Why did Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson run again for president in 2022, after he lost his bid for the same position 18 years ago and despite early surveys showing him lagging behind other aspirants?
Consider it Lacson’s “last hurrah,” Rappler investigative editor Miriam Grace Go said in a panel discussion coinciding with the final rallies of most presidential candidates on Saturday, May 7.
“I think it’s the last hurrah for their generation. He and [running mate Tito] Sotto are the oldest candidates in their respective races,” Go said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Both 73 years old, Lacson and Sotto see no problem with their age affecting their performance should they be elected as president and vice president of the Philippines. The two even used their age to their advantage during the 2022 election campaign period, calling themselves as the most experienced candidates.
Go said that consistent with his “Mr. Clean” image, Lacson, both in 2004 and 2022, clearly ran out of frustration with the corruption and incompetence he saw in the administration during those times. In 2004, he ran against incumbent Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo; in 2022, he offered a kind of governance that was unlike Rodrigo Duterte’s.
