Senator Risa Hontiveros is poised to return to the upper chamber after winning her reelection bid, making her the only opposition candidate to secure a Senate seat in the May 2022 polls.
Hontiveros’ victory assures the presence of an opposition voice in a Senate that will be dominated by allies of President Rodrigo Duterte and candidates endorsed by the Uniteam slate.
In the incoming 19th Congress, Hontiveros will likewise be the only opposition senator left in the upper chamber, after Senator Kiko Pangilinan ran for vice president, reelectionist and detained Senator Leila de Lima appeared headed for loss in the 2022 polls, and outgoing Senator Franklin Drilon retires from politics.
Partial, official canvass for 2022 senatorial elections
A total of 172 out of 173 certificates of canvass (COC) for senator have already been canvassed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
These are enough for today’s proclamation, said the Comelec, because the vote counts in the sole remaining COC from Lanao del Sur will not affect the placement of the winning candidates. Special elections were held in some barangays in Lanao del Sur due to failure of elections on May 9.
