The 1Sambayan opposition coalition is set to announce the presidential candidate it will endorse in the 2022 elections on Thursday, September 30.
The convenors are expected to make the announcement during their “TAPATan 1Sambayan” virtual press conference at 2 pm.
The 1Sambayan coalition was launched in June with the end-goal of nominating a single opposition slate for the high-stakes 2022 polls.
Convenors and members believe only a united opposition has a chance to defeat President Rodrigo Duterte’s regime in 2022.
Of the six names 1Sambayan nominated for president, however, only two readily agreed to be part of the selection process: Vice President Leni Robredo of the once-ruling Liberal Party and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV of Magdalo.
Days before their official announcement, convenors were torn between two tough choices: Robredo and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who earlier begged off to be included in 1Sambayan’s list.
