The Catholic Church in Cebu held the Pontifical Mass for the Fiesta Señor (Feast of the Holy Child) at 6 am Sunday, January 17, streaming live on various platforms including Rappler.

In Cebu, a tribute to the Holy Child (Santo Niño) involves dancing the Sinulog, a two-step dance believed to be an indigenous ritual that traces its roots to tribes of pre-hispanic Philippines.

People also greet each other with “Pit Señor” – or to “ask from the Lord.”

This year, however, because of strict health protocols, there is no Sinulog Grand Parade, which traditionally follows at the end of the Pontifical Mass.

All physical events were cancelled to prevent adding to the number of COVID-19 cases in Cebu City. Authorities noted a 5-fold spike in infections since Christmas Day, December 25.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, who was recently admitted to the hospital after exhibiting influenza-like symptoms, is still scheduled to preside over the Mass.
