Filipino nurse stabbed while on duty in Saudi Arabia

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino nurse in Saudi Arabia was stabbed by a local there while on duty, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Sunday night, May 20.

According to the DFA, 29-year-old emergency room nurse Rolando Mina sustained multiple stab wounds on his arms after he was suddenly attacked by a 22-year-old Saudi Arabian man while working inside a hospital last Thursday, May 17.

The incident was captured by the hospital's closed-circuit television system. The video of the attack was posted online, immediately going viral.

The video showed the suspect slowly approaching Mina and suddenly pulling out what seems to be a knife. He then started stabbing Mina, who tried to block the knife with his arms until other hospital staff were able to push the suspect away.

The DFA said the suspect is now in police custody and the case has already been endorsed to the public prosecutor for investigation.

Authorities are still trying to determine the motive for the attack, as even Mina claims he does not know the suspect, according to the DFA.

The Filipino nurse is currently in stable condition. Officials from the Saudi Ministry of Health visited him last Friday, May 18.

Hospital management also provided him with security guards and assured him of assistance, including payment of his salary while recovering.

The Office of the Consulate General has also dispatched case officers to assist Mina and coordinate with local authorities handling the case.
