All persons in the Philippines are now required to wear both “full” face shields and face masks in all places outside of their homes, announced Malacañang on Tuesday, December 15.

“Face shields used to be required only in malls and enclosed areas but now you need to wear both face shields and face masks,” said Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque in Filipino.

He also emphasized that “full” face shields are required. Full face shields cover both eyes and mouth.

The upgraded safety protocol was introduced at a time when the government expects a surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, a time when Filipinos step outside of their homes to do shopping or meet with loved ones.

“It’s an additional protection to avoid a surge. It won’t be required if it is not good for our health,” said Roque.

The government previously released guidance asking Filipinos to still limit their activities outside of their homes. Gatherings of more than 10 people are still prohibited in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ).

Religious gatherings like mass or work-related gatherings like seminars and conferences must be kept at 30% capacity of its venue. – Rappler.com
