Rappler Talk: The military and social media
What goes into the military's strategy in the use of social media? Watch the interview on Rappler.

The Philippine military has been grilled repeatedly in the past few weeks for the use of social media by its units and leaders.

In September, Facebook removed a network of accounts linked to the military and the police for “inauthentic behavior” that magnified conversations supporting the Duterte administration.

Meanwhile, different military units and top official Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade Jr have been slammed by students, activists, and Leftist groups for red-tagging and terror-tagging their members without sufficient basis.

Rappler’s Rambo Talabong speaks with arguably the military’s most savvy user of social media, Colonel Harold Cabunoc, who manages a Facebook page with over 240 thousand followers.

He has also been criticized on several occasions for his Facebook posts, but he is more known for sharing stories that humanize soldiers while promoting the military and the government’s security policies.

What goes into the military’s strategy in the use of social media? How can the military provide accurate and timely information without getting entangled in controversy?
