The former president's nearly one-month bout with COVID-19 and a lung infection resulted in his multiple visits to the ICU

Former Philippine president Joseph “Erap” Estrada is set to be discharged from the hospital on Monday, April 26, nearly a month after he was rushed to the hospital due to his COVID-19 infection.

His son, former senator Jinggoy Estrada, shared the news on Facebook on Monday.

“Our family is overjoyed to announce that our father will finally be discharged from the hospital today. We would like to express our gratitude to his doctors for their expertise and care,” Jinggoy said.

The Estrada patriarch was confined on March 28 after his COVID-19 test yielded a positive result, and was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) and placed on a mechanical ventilator.

Erap was first moved out of the ICU on April 14 after testing negative for COVID-19, but Jinggoy said on April 16 that his father was transferred back to the ICU due to a bacterial lung infection.

On Monday, April 19, he was again moved out of the ICU as his health condition improved, in time for his 84th birthday. – Rappler.com
