Lingayen town Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil says 'all of us are at fault' for the increase in coronavirus cases

Lingayen town here is considering implementing localized lockdowns in barangays in a bid to curb the rising cases of COVID-19 in these areas.

Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil said they were contemplating this move because Lingayen was still among the top 5 towns in the province with the biggest caseload of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

The Lingayen health office says the town has 29 recorded infections.

In a letter to barangay leaders, Tuesday, October 20, Bataoil said: “All of us are at fault.”

He said the public became complacent and “let their guard down, thinking that under MGCQ, we can live our lives normally.”

It was in this letter that the mayor said that if the number of coronavirus cases do not decrease, “I may be forced to use my powers under the law to implement a localized lockdown per barangay.”

Previously, only locally stranded individuals (LSI) in the town were the tested positive for the virus. However, the latest surge in cases are suspected to be of local transmission, or infections among clusters.

“All of this, to protect our town,” said Bataoil.

Bataoil told barangay leaders to intensify the implementation and monitoring of health safety protocols. These include wearing of face masks and face shields, physical distancing, and prohibiting mass gatherings.

On Wednesday, October 21, the town recorded 4 fresh cases of COVID-19. These were in Barangay Baay, Libsong West, and Poblacion. Two of new infections were frontliners, one a direct contact of a positive patient, while another was a former patient under investigation (PUI).

The town also listed 5 recoveries.

Lingayen now has a total of 80 COVID-19 cases, of which 48 have recovered. The death toll was 3. – Rappler.com
