A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Abra province on Wednesday morning, July 27, with the tremor so strong it was felt in other parts of Luzon.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said 1,412 aftershocks have been recorded as of Saturday, July 30, 12 pm.

Luzon quake damages 226 schools; P1.2B needed for repairs

The Department of Education said on Friday, July 29, that 226 out of 9,539 affected schools have been damaged, according to its updated field report. 

These damaged schools are from the following areas, according to the latest Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service information:

  • Cordillera Administrative Region – 132 
  • Ilocos Region – 49
  • Cagayan Valley – 25
  • Central Luzon – 18
  • Calabarzon – 1
  • National Capital Region – 1

Of these, 422 classrooms were totally damaged while 636 classrooms were partially damaged. An estimated P1.298 billion is needed to repair these damaged classrooms.

Bodies of 4 missing people retrieved

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said it had received a report that the remains of four missing people in Abra had been found, raising the number of reported deaths to 10.

The four new fatalities, as well as another death in Ilocos Region, were being validated with their respective local government units before being included in the official count.

Philippines airlifts aid to areas cut off since earthquake

Philippine authorities on Friday, July 29, airlifted supplies to districts that have been cut off since a powerful earthquake struck the main island of Luzon this week, as residents pleaded for food and temporary shelter.

The military said it had deployed personnel and helicopters to distribute relief goods to seven isolated towns in Abra province.
