Mark Villar accepts Duterte offer to be DPWH chief

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Newly reelected Las Piñas Representative Mark Villar has accepted president-elect Rodrigo Duterte's offer to become chief of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a statement on Tuesday, May 17, Villar said he decided to "humbly accept" Duterte's offer after consulting his family and constituents.

Villar is the son of real estate magnate and former senator Manuel "Manny" Villar, and incumbent senator Cynthia Villar.

He was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2010, then won a second term in 2013. His third term was supposed to be from 2016 to 2019.

Before entering politics, Villar was president of Crown Asia, one of the companies under his family's conglomerate, Vista Land.

Manny Villar, the president and CEO of Vista Land, recently said that federalism, one of Duterte's key campaign promises, would likely benefit property developers.

The elder Villar is also the president of the Nacionalista Party (NP), which signed a "coalition for change agreement" with Duterte's Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on Monday, May 16.

After the signing, the former Senate President told reporters that NP and PDP-Laban would cooperate to initiate reforms under the Duterte administration. (READ: LIST: Who's who in the incoming Duterte Cabinet) –
