(UPDATED) They will be directed to installation lanes where they can have RFID stickers installed on the day of travel, says the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation

Motorists without RFIDs by November 2 will still be allowed to pass through NLEX, SCTEX, CAVITEX, C5 Link, and CALAX, the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) said in a statement on Saturday, October 24.

This comes after the Department of Transportation ordered in August all toll road operators to shift to contactless payments by November 2, to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

MPTC said motorists without RFIDs by November 2 will be directed to RFID installation lanes where they can have RFID stickers installed. The stickers will be free except for the initial load, and the corresponding toll fee charge on that particular day will be deducted from the initial load.

“There’s no need for those who will not travel on November 2 or infrequent expressway travelers to be in a rush to get the RFID stickers since they can have the RFID installed on the day of their travel. This is to avoid overcrowding and long queues at the installation sites,” said J. Luigi Bautista, NLEX Corporation president and general manager.

MPTC is converting some of the cash lanes in all toll plazas to drive-thru RFID installation lanes. Aside from this, other RFID installation and reloading sites in various locations will remain open.

“In anticipation, we will have our RFID Assist Squads positioned at the toll plaza as it has always been our priority to help any motorist who would like to use our expressways at any time,” said MPTC chief of technology Roberto Bontia, noting the possible concerns that may arise from the motorists who have paid cash for the longest time.

More information about the location of MPTC’s authorized customer service stations can be found on the official social media pages of NLEX-SCTEX, CAVITEX-C5 Link, and CALAX, MPTC said.

MPTC is the holding company of NLEX, SCTEX, CAVITEX, C5 Link, and CALAX.

In a separate statement on Saturday, the Toll Regulatory Board confirmed toll operators are ready to implement cashless collection systems at their respective tollways on November 2.

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is also extending its free installation of RFID stickers in its tolls but only up to November 30. Its installation and reloading lanes are found at toll plaza entry points and in strategic locations in Metro Manila and Luzon provinces. SMC-operated tollways include Skyway, SLEX, NAIAX, STAR Tollways, and TPLEX. – Rappler.com
