The Philippine military on Wednesday, July 28, announced the promotion of Hidilyn Diaz from sergeant to staff sergeant effective July 27, following her historic victory in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Diaz serves as a sergeant under the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Civil Military Operations Group.
In a statement, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said that PAF commanding general Lieutenant General Allen Paredes approved Diaz’s promotion on Wednesday. A staff sergeant receives a salary of more than P30,000 (around $595) each month.
The military also commended Diaz for her victory: “We laud and support this move at the General Headquarters to mark SSg Diaz’ remarkable achievements in the field of sports and for bringing pride and glory to our country.”
This was the second time that the Philippine military promoted Diaz for bringing pride to the country. Following her victory in the 2018 Asian Games, Diaz was promoted by the PAF from airwoman first class to sergeant.
On July 26, Diaz won the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal after beating world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China in the weightlifting women’s 55kg event. The Philippines’ golden girl bagged the victory and made an Olympic record after she managed to lift 127kg in the clean and jerk category.
Aside from the promotion, Diaz is set to receive millions of pesos in incentives from the government and the private sector. – Rappler.com
