Court: Transfer Napoles to Laguna

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - A Makati court on Friday, August 30, ordered the transfer of Janet Lim Napoles from the Makati City jail to Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The order was signed by Judge Elmo Alameda of Branch 150 of the Makati Regional Trial Court.

The order said it's up to the Makati City jail and the police to determine the appropriate time of the transfer.

Earlier in the day, the Makati City jail warden as well as the head of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region of the Philippine National Police (PNP) appeared before the court and recommended the transfer of Napoles.

Senior Supt Roberto Fajardo, commander of CIDG-NCR told the court Fort Sto Domingo in Santa Rosa, Laguna, is guarded by the elite Special Action Force of the PNP.

Former Muslim rebel leader Nur Misuari was once detained in this facility following a botched mutiny under the Arroyo administration. Ousted President Joseph Estrada and former coup plotter now Sen Gregorio Honasan were also detained in this facility.

Fajardo said it is 45 minutes away from the court.

Government prosecutors attempted to oppose the assessment of the warden and the CIDG. They argued it's going to be risky to be regularly transporting Napoles from Laguna to Makati.

But Fajardo said the 45-minute transport is "better" than the 24-hour risk at the Makati City jail.

Napoles was brought to the Makati jail Thursday night, August 29, upon the orders of the court. The alleged mastermind of a massive pork barrel scam surrendered to President Benigno Aquino III Wednesday night, August 28; she spent her first night as a detainee at Camp Crame, headquarters of the Philippine National Police. - Rappler.com
