(3rd UPDATE) Maliksi had a long history in public office, from serving as vice mayor of Imus in the 1980s, to his appointment as PCSO chair during the Aquino administration

Former Cavite governor Erineo “Ayong” Maliksi died on Wednesday, February 24. He was 82.

His son, Imus City Mayor Emmanuel “Manny” Maliksi, announced this in a Facebook post late Wednesday evening.

“Higit sa pagiging isang serbisyo-publiko, ikaw ay naging isang mapagmahal at mapagkalingang ama sa amin…. Ipinamalas mo hindi lamang sa buong bansa, kundi na rin sa buong mundo ang puso ng isang Imuseño, at kagitingan ng tunay na Kabiteño,” the mayor said, addressing his father.

(More than being a public servant, you were a loving and caring father to us…. You showed not just the country but the world the heart of an Imuseño, the greatness of a Caviteño.)

The younger Maliksi initially didn’t say the cause of death, but during the wake on February 28, he said the patriarch succumbed to COVID-19-induced stroke. The former governor reportedly tested positive of the coronavirus on February 14, but was already recovering and tested negative when he suffered cardiac arrest.

Maliksi’s wake was held at the family-owned Villa Emilia Farm, Malagasang I-A, Imus City.

Maliksi had been in public office for nearly 40 years. A protegé of the late Cavite governor Juanito Remulla, he was vice mayor of Imus, the capital of the province, from 1980 to 1986, then its mayor 1988 to 1998. He was second district congressman from 1998 to 2001, and from 2010 to 2013, and Cavite governor from 2001 to 2010. His last post was as chair of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office from 2015 to 2016.

“We will forever remember the legacies and wonderful memories he left behind. May his soul rest in peace,” said House Deputy Speaker Strike Revilla.

Maraming salamat po sa inyong taos pusong paglilingkod sa ating minamahal na probinsya,” said 6th District Representative Luis Ferrer IV. (Thank you for your wholehearted service to our beloved province.)

Governor Jonvic Remulla, who defeated Maliksi in the latter’s last two bids to return to the capitol, extended his condolences to the Maliksi family. In a Facebook post, he said: “Although our relationship was never perfect, I regard him as a gentleman, a leader, and a steadfast Caviteño. These are times when politics end, and civility begins.”
