(UPDATED) The family of Dante Jimenez confirms that he died of an aortic aneurysm

Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chair Dante Jimenez died on Friday night, his family confirmed to the media on Saturday, January 30.

The Jimenez family said in a statement that the PACC chief died of an aortic aneurysm. He was 68.

“With deep sorrow, the family announces the passing away of Dante La. Jimenez, PACC chairman, due to aortic aneurysm at 9:43 pm, Friday, January 29, 2021,” the family said.

“We ask for your prayers for the eternal repose of a man who devoted his life in the crusade against crime and corruption and for good governance. We will miss him so dearly. May he rest in peace,” they added.

Aside from being PACC chair, Jimenez was also appointed as the co-chair of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs in February 2020. Jimenez had sought to show his commitment to the job by signing an acceptance letter with his own blood.

He replaced Vice President Leni Robredo after she was sacked as ICAD co-chair.

Jimenez is the founding chair of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC). The VACC was established in 1998 with the goal of fighting crime and corrupt practices while assisting crime victims and working on the improvement of the crime justice system.

One of the VACC’s co-founders, Lauro Vizconde, died in 2016.

Malacañang expressed its condolences to the family and colleagues of Jimenez.

“PACC Chair Jimenez spent most of his productive life advocating a just and peaceful society for Filipinos by fighting criminality and corruption. He believed and shared President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s centerpiece program, which is, the campaign against illegal drugs, crime and corruption,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

In 2017, the VACC under Jimenez filed an impeachment complaint against then-Ombudsman Conchito Carpio Morales but no lawmaker endorsed it. This was months after Duterte said he wanted the fiery official ousted for alleged “selective justice” as at the time, the Office of the Ombudsman said that it was investigating the Duterte family’s wealth. – Rappler.com
