Aquino's former aide is new PH Air Force chief

MANILA, Philippines (Updated) – President Benigno Aquino III appointed his former senior military assistant, Major General Jeffrey Delgado, the new chief of the Philippine Air Force.

"The AFP welcomes the appointment of Major General Jeffrey Delgado as the new Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force, replacing retiring Lieutenant General Lauro Catalino dela Cruz," said military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala in a text message Thursday afternoon, April 24. 

The change of command and retirement ceremonies will be held on Friday at the Fernando Air Base in Lipa, Batangas. 

Delgado was a member of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) during the administration of the President Corazon Aquino. He served as her son's aide after he won the presidential elections in 2010. He later became commander of the 15th Strike Wing before moving to the Office of the Deputy Chief for Plans (J5). 

"MGen Delgado is an experienced pilot, who flew MG520s and T28 trojan, in close air support operations," said Zagala.

Delgado is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1982.

The Army also has a new chief, with Lieutenant General Hernando Iriberri assuming the post last February. 

The Navy will also have a new chief next week. Vice Admiral Jose Luis Alano is retiring on Wednesday, April 30. 

Vice chief of staff Lieutenant General Alan Luga is also retiring on May 12. Armed Forces chief of staff General Emmanuel Bautista is also retiring on July 20. – Rappler.com
