HELP. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines holds a fundraiser for the benefit of media workers who are stuck by the coronavirus.

'While some may be receiving support from their newsrooms and employers, many – especially those outside the capital and those who are freelancers – are not,' the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines says

The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines on Wednesday, April 28, relaunched Tabang Media to serve as a fundraiser and peer support program for media workers afflicted with the coronavirus.

“As the Philippines sees high, often record-breaking, daily rises in COVID-19, NUJP has been receiving mounting reports of colleagues testing positive for the coronavirus,” NUJP said in a statement posted on its social media accounts.

“While some may be receiving support from their newsrooms and employers, many – especially those outside the capital and those who are freelancers – are not,” it added.

According to NUJP Secretary General Len Olea, the organization has recorded at least 58 media workers struck by the virus since the pandemic began in March 2020.

NUJP paid tribute to colleagues lost to COVID-19, including Edwin Sevidal of dzMM and GMA-7 cameramen Alex Ico and Caloy Samaniego.
