CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – On the 3rd day of the year, a tribal leader and council member of Indug Katawhan – a group of Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) survivors – was shot dead in Compostela Valley.
Marcelo Monterona, 41, was killed outside his house in Barangay Elizalde in the town of Maco Friday noon, January 3.
Sheena Duazo, spokesperson of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Southern Mindanao, said they believe state agents were behind the killing.
Another tribal leader Pedro Tinga was shot dead in the area last year.
Indug Katawhan led massive protests in the region to demand for rapid, and quality relief and rehabilitation services after Typhoon Pablo struck the region in December 2012, leaving more than 1,000 dead.
The group also staged a rally outside a big mining corporation to demand reparation to the damage on the environment allegedly caused by its operations. - Rappler.com
