(1st UPDATE) The movie and TV director is now the President's adviser on creative communications. Malacañang has yet to explain his new role.

MANILA, Philippines – Director Paul Soriano has been appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as his adviser on creative communications, Malacañang confirmed Monday, October 17.

The Office of the Press Secretary said Soriano is set to take his oath on Monday afternoon before Marcos himself.

Soriano is a popular television and movie director who was at the helm of Marcos’ ads in the 2022 campaign. He also directed Marcos’ first State of the Nation Address.

His ties to Marcos go beyond the professional – he is related to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.

Both President Marcos and the First Lady were wedding sponsors or godparents to Soriano and his wife, TV personality and YouTuber Toni Gonzaga. Gonzaga was also among Marcos’ top celebrity endorsers in 2022.

In a news release, the Palace said Soriano agreed to receive P1 as his annual salary.

“Soriano is tasked to advise the Chief Executive and assist departments and agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, on matters that will enhance their information dissemination programs and initiatives,” the Palace said. – Rappler.com

Appointment without job description? Is this “good governance”? Well, that is what you call “President Marcos Jr.’s style,” part of his brand of leadership in this country.
