The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) flexed its military might ahead of the celebration of its 85th founding anniversary on December 21, in an effort to reassure Filipinos of their commitment to protecting the country.

The Philippine military, one of the weakest in Asia, paraded on Wednesday, December 16, an armada of its assets near the historic coast of Bataan. Its forces comprised a total of 63 fighter aircraft and war vessels.

The warships BRP Jose Rizal and BRP Davao del Sur led the contingent of the Philippine Navy, while 3 FA-50 fighter jets and 2 Black Hawk helicopters headlined for the Philippine Air Force.

The program

The fleet review and aircraft flyby were viewed from the BRP Tarlac by top military officials, notably Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and AFP chief General Gilbert Gapay.

Gapay thanked President Duterte for his support in the AFP’s multibillion-peso modernization program, which has been delayed by the pandemic.

“We are truly grateful to our Commander in Chief, President Rodrigo Duterte, for the unprecedented support to our modernization,” General Gapay said.

Why does this matter?

The military sought to reassure Filipinos of their presence and their commitment to protecting the country as it faces constant aggression from China in the West Philippine Sea.

“This showcase of our reliable and modern assets is our gift to the Filipino people. This is where your taxes go,” Gapay said.

He added: “The AFP as protector of the people and the state shall continue its judicious use of its resources and protect the trust and support the people have vested on us.” – Rappler.com
