Pnoy reappoints Naguiat to Pagcor board

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has re-appointed Cristino Naguiat Jr to the board of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor), of which he is the current chairman.

Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said the appointment papers of Naguiat were signed last December 12.

However, this does not mean that Naguiat automatically becomes the chairman of Pagcor again. The new board will be the one to nominate and elect a chairman.

"Yes, [he was] reappointed as member of the PAGCOR Board, the board will nominate the chairman. Under GOCC [Government owned and controlled corporation] law, all officers have a standard term of one year," Valte told Rappler via SMS on Saturday, December 15.

Naguiat is the current Pagcor chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). He replaced Efraim Genuino who was appointed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Genuino's name has been dragged in a controversy involving one of his consultants, Rodolfo Soriano, who allegedly received US$30 million in bribe funds from the Okada group.

The allegations were made public via reports from Reuters. The Okada group has sued the US-based news wire agency for defamation.

Naguiat was himself once dragged into the scandal involving expensive trips to various casino-hotels that Okada has a stake in. He recently told members of the press that due process will be observed in the Okada probe. -
