MANILA, Philippines – The eldest daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay will complete his senatorial slate.
United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) Secretary-General Navotas Rep Tobias “Toby” Tiangco announced that Nancy Binay-Angeles will be the 12th senatorial candidate of UNA, replacing businessman Joey de Venecia who backed out of the race.
Tiangco told Rappler that he talked to the top leaders of UNA, who agreed to field Nancy Binay on Thursday, October 4.
"We are encouraged by Nancy’s consistently strong performance in the surveys. She has always landed in the winning circle in both Pulse Asia and SWS with the least effort. There has also been a groundswell of support for her candidacy coming from sectoral groups and non-governmental organizations nationwide. We cannot ignore these voices and their commitment to help Nancy and the entire senatorial slate of UNA," Tiangco said in a statement.
Nancy Binay graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Tourism at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. She served as personal assistant to her father during his term as mayor and for housing concerns after his election in 2010.
The 39-year-old Nancy Binay has been part of UNA as deputy secretary-general. Despite her survey ratings, she had refused to join politics.
Now, Nancy will join her siblings in vying for positions in the 2013 elections.
Her brother, Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr is running for reelection. Her sister, Makati Rep Mar-Len Abigail Binay-Campos of the 2nd District, is also running for reelection.
Nancy Binay joins other political children in the UNA slate: San Juan Rep JV Ejercito, former President Joseph Estrada’s son, and Cagayan Rep Juan Ponce “Jack” Enrile Jr, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
In a phone interview, however, Nancy Binay said she still has to wait for one more meeting of the UNA executive committee on Thursday, October 4, to decide on de Venecia’s replacement.
“Whatever the party decides, I will follow. It will depend on the excom. Hopefully, there is a decision by tonight or tomorrow,” Nancy Binay said.
UNA’s executive committee is composed of the Vice President, former President Estrada and Senate President Enrile.
Race vs time
The alliance is racing against time, with the deadline of filing of certificates of candidacy falling on Friday, October 5. UNA had to look for a new candidate after de Venecia backed out just over the weekend.
Although she is a political neophyte, Nancy Binay was considered by the alliance because she has been faring well in surveys. In the September Pulse Asia survey, Binay ranked 12th-15th, within the so-called winning circle.
Initially, both father and daughter Binay were reluctant about including Nancy Binay in the slate. The Vice President had ruled out his daughter’s senatorial bid.
Other than Nancy Binay, UNA also considered Puerto Princesa, Palawan Mayor Edward Hagedorn to fill the slot but Tiangco said there was conflict between Hagedorn's family and another UNA candidate in the local races.
