Vice President Jejomar Binay will lead UNA's campaign in Iloilo. Can the opposition win in Roxas country?

'NOT ANYMORE.' The opposition United Nationalist Alliance believes Western Visayas is Roxas country no more, saying its local allies can deliver for Vice President Jejomar Binay's candidates. File photo of President Aquino and Roxas' Capiz visit in February 2013 by Malacañang Photo Bureau

BORACAY, Philippines – Vice President Jejomar Binay will lead the opposition’s campaign in Western Visayas, the home region of Liberal Party president-on-leave Mar Roxas.

Binay will endorse his senatorial bets and local candidates in Iloilo on Sunday, April 14.

Can candidates of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) win in the Liberal Party bailiwick?

It’s not just a tourist destination; it’s also the candidates’ pit stop.

The opposition United Nationalist Alliance campaigns here in Boracay, Aklan, as part of efforts to court vote-rich Western Visayas.

Home to over 4 million voters, the region is the bailiwick of Liberal Party president-on-leave Mar Roxas, the bitter rival of UNA founder Vice President Jejomar Binay.

UNA senatorial bets visit Aklan, Antique, Iloilo and Bacolod, hoping to gain ground in provinces dominated by LP officials and candidates.

Roxas hails from Capiz while Team PNoy campaign manager Sen Frank Drilon is from Iloilo.

But Binay’s daughter, Nancy, says the region can deliver for UNA.

UNA SENATORIAL BET

Maganda ang mga laban ng governors naming sa Western Visayas. It’s a good fight in spite of the fact incumbent ang kalaban nila at ang machinery ng LP ay double time sa Western Visayas, they’re doing pretty well.

The highlight of UNA’s Western Visayas leg will be the Iloilo proclamation rallies, to be headed by Vice President Binay himself.

Binay will endorse the province’s Biron clan, going up against the Defensor, Garin and Tupas families, all allied with the LP.

Binay lost in Roxas’ home region in 2010 but UNA hopes that with new allies, things will change this time around.

UNA’s Western Visayas visit comes on the heels of President Aquino and his slate’s 2nd visit to the region, where they claimed victory because of the Roxas factor.

The Roxas-Binay rivalry, and new local dynamics all make for a political contest as hot as the Boracay sun.
