MANILA, Philippines - A candidate for mayor in San Jose, Tarlac, was gunned down on Monday, May 6.

Rudy Abella, a former barangay captain running under Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, was shot at around 5pm by armed men on motorcycles.

According to a Facebook page that appears to have been set up by Abella's family, he was shot 5 times. "Binaril siya ng tatlong beses. Sinubukan niyang lumaban ngunit binaril siya ulit ng 2 beses (He was shot 3 times. He tried to fight back but he was shot 2 more times)," one of the posts read. The incident happened at around 5 pm. Abella had just delivered a campaign speech in a barangay meeting.

Abella was on a one-on-one race with re-electionist Mayor Jose Yap Jr. of the Nationalist Peoples' Coalition. Yap is the eldest son of the late Gov Jose "Aping" Yap, Sr. and the brother of incumbent Gov. Victor Yap. -
