MANILA, Philippines - Siquijor congressional bet Dr. Jose Jay Pernes succumbed to a massive heart attack on Sunday, May 12, a day before the mid-term polls.

Pernes, a Liberal Party bet, was rushed to Siquijor Provincial Hospital at least an hour away from his hometown in Lonoc via a ferry, but was proclaimed dead at around 3 pm, according to Jose Logarta of party-list Akbayan, which had worked with Pernes in previous projects.

This was confirmed by Joel Rocamora of the National Anti-Poverty Commission. In a text message to Rappler, Rocamora said Pernes' wife, Maria Anne Serano Pernes, will be the Liberal Party's substitute bet for the position.

Pernes was running against Doc J. Orlando "Shane" fua, Jr. of Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats.

Pernes' body is now at Calibo Funeral Homes in Candanay Sur but will be moved the next day to Larena Queen Gate funeral parlor, Logarta added. -
