Fariñas pushed to run for senator

MANILA, Philippines – His colleagues in the House of Representatives are pushing Ilocos Norte Rep Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas to run for the Senate next year under the ruling Liberal Party (LP).

Citing his long experience in politics, Eastern Samar Rep Ben Evadorne told reporters on Tuesday, June 26 that “his (Fariñas) competence is beyond question.” Fariñas had previously served as mayor of Laoag City and governor of Ilocos Norte. (Read Fariñas’ profile here.)

Fariñas was also among the prosecutors of dismissed Chief Justice Renato Corona. Fariñas’ “palusot” speech that wrapped up the prosecution’s case against Corona was an instant hit at the end of the trial.

“I hope we will be able to convince Congressman Fariñas,” according to Evardone. He said they have discussed their proposal with Fariñas but did not say how the latter reacted to it.

Evardone said the Movement 188 in the House will endorse Fariñas to become a candidate of the LP, which is headed by President Benigno Aquino III. Movement 188 is a group of representatives that signed the impeachment complaint against Corona.

Fariñas is a member of the Nacionalista Party (NP), one of the coalition allies of the administration.

Evardone said Movement 188 will also support the possible senatorial bids of current and former House colleagues Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, former Cibac Rep and now TESDA director-general Joel Villanueva, and San Juan Rep JV Ejercito. – Rappler.com
