‘This is my husband’s calling’ – Korina Sanchez
The news anchor says she is not bothered by the survey numbers of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas

MANILA, Philippines – From where she sat inside Club Filipino, Korina Sanchez-Roxas couldn’t help but tear up as she listened to President Benigno Aquino III officially endorse her husband, Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

“I think the speech of the President was so heartfelt. I had tears in my eyes several times,” Sanchez said after the Liberal Party event at the historic Club Filipino on Friday, July 31.

She added: “I know what Mar had to go through; what the President had to go through. To come to this point is something really emotional for us.” ( READ: Mar Roxas: The long road to endorsement)

In the same venue in 2009, Roxas announced that he was giving up his presidential bid in spite of long preparations. He gave way to Aquino, his party mate, who was thrust into the presidential race after the death of his mother, democracy icon Corazon Aquino.

Roxas slid down to become Aquino’s running mate. But he lost to Vice President Jejomar Binay, largely because of a split in their campaign team.

Six years later on Friday, July 31, Roxas proceeds with his plans to aim for the presidency after clinching the support of Aquino. (READ:#TheLeaderIWant: Mar Roxas’ to-fix list for 2016)

“Now that we have the actual anointment of PNoy,’ sabi ni Mar sa akin: ‘Parang nanalo na din ako’ (Mar told me, ‘I already feel like a winner’),”  Sanchez said.

“I feel very happy for my husband. I think this is his calling. I’m very happy for him. I will always stand beside him wherever he goes,” added Sanchez, one of the top anchors of television network ABS-CBN.

It was a relief for many supporters of Roxas, who agonized over the President’s meetings with survey front runner Senator Grace Poe. She also hoped for Aquino’s endorsement.

The low survey numbers of Roxas doesn’t bother her, Sanchez said. The Cabinet official is ranked third in presidential preference polls, after Poe and Binay.

“We try not to look too much at the numbers because ang pinaka-importanteng number ay sa (the most important number is on) May 2016,” she said.

Sanchez also noted that Roxas got 20 million votes in the 2004 senatorial elections and 14 million votes in the 2010 vice presidential race.

Hindi natin masasabing hindi siya kilala. Kailangan lang natin ipakilala bilang pinakamahusay na magiging leader sa pinakamataas na posisyon (You can’t say that he is not popular. We just have to introduce him as the best potential leader for the highest position),” she said.

In his endorsement speech that day, Aquino said that if Roxas’ numbers are low, the party would just work hard to introduce the “true Mar” to the people. – Rappler.com
