Trillanes: Magdalo wants Grace Poe for president
Trillanes says the group has 500,000 official members nationwide who would 'actively campaign' for Poe at the grassroots level

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said his Magdalo group would support the presidential bid of Senator Grace Poe in 2016, even as the neophyte senator has yet to make a declaration.

Trillanes said Poe is the preferred candidate of their leaders.

“If Senator Grace Poe runs for president, our Magdalo Group would support her. We have conducted extensive consultations among our chapter leaders the past few weeks and she is the preferred candidate for the 2016 presidential elections,” Trillanes said in a statement.

Trillanes said Magdalo has 500,000 official members nationwide who would “actively campaign” for Poe at the grassroots level.

Trillanes said Magdalo’s support is only for Poe. He has repeatedly declared his intention to run for vice president in 2016.

‘Thankful’

Poe, for her part, welcomed Magdalo’s declaration of support for her despite having different political plans.

Poe lauded Trillanes and his group for their staunch fight against the “abuse and corruption” of the Arroyo administration.

“Ako ay nagpapasalamat sa suportang ipinahayag ni Senador Antonio Trillanes sa ngalan ng partido Magdalo. Saan man kami dalhin ng pagkakataon sa pulitika, ako ay kaisa nila sa simulain at dedikasyong magsilbi ng tapat sa bayan,” Poe said in a statement.

(I thank Senator Antonio Trillanes and the Magdalo for their declaration of support. Wherever politics leads us, I am one with their advocacy and dedication to honestly serve the country.)

Trillanes’ Magdalo started as a group of soldiers who staged coup attempts against the Arroyo administration to protest corruption in the military. The group turned into a party-list organization as its members vied for congressional posts. – Rappler.com
