The province is considered a bailiwick of her standard-bearer Mar Roxas, who topped the senatorial elections in 2004 and the vice presidential race in 2010 here

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – For her first sortie as vice presidential aspirant, Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo has chosen to visit on Tuesday, October 6, the province of Negros Occidental, a bailiwick of her standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

Roxas, whose mother Judy Araneta-Roxas hails from Bago City, topped the senatorial elections in this province in 2004, and also won the vice presidential race here in 2010.

He garnered 707,313 votes in the province, including Bacolod City, while his rival then Mayor Jejomar Binay got only 221,679 votes. Binay won the vice presidency.

Bacolod City Councilor Caesar Distrito, coordinator of Robredo’s visit here, said that the LP candidate will arrive at the airport in Silay City at 5:40 am. She will then proceed to Bacolod for a TV interview and radio guesting.

Robredo will then go to Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in Talisay City for a talk on “Governance for the Youth.”

At 9:30 am, she will meet with Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra at the Bishop’s Palace in Bacolod, then proceed to the Provincial Capitol to meet with Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr and other provincial and local officials.

She will then meet with private and civic leaders at an undisclosed venue over lunch.

She will fly back to Naga after lunch, Distrito said.

“Bacolod and Negros are very lucky and important, as this is the first city and province she is visiting right after her declaration [to run for] vice president. The people here are very proud of the honor and importance [given us],” Distrito said.

‘Formidable tandem’

Marañon, who was present during the declaration of Robredo on Monday at Club Filipino in Manila, said that he is “happy” that Robredo has taken up the challenge to be Roxas’ running mate.

The governor said that “she is highly qualified and will serve as the ‘light’ and the ‘heart’ of the LP campaign, being a woman, a mother, a lawyer, social advocate and legislator.”

“Her decision has long been awaited. It was, no doubt, a great sacrifice for her as a widow and a mother of 3, but her move was in response to a much higher calling and clamor of the President and the LP to put the nation’s interest above self,” the governor added.

He stressed that Roxas and Robredo are a “formidable team.” “I am enjoining all Negrenses to support the LP standard bearers for 2016,” the governor said.

Joining Marañon in Manila were representatives Jeffrey Ferrer (4th district) and Leo Rafael Cueva (2nd district); Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella; Board Member Salvador Escalante Jr (2nd district); and former Governor now Capitol consultant, Rafael Coscolluela. Rappler.com
