‘It’s Showtime’ host Jhong Hilario to run for Makati councilor
Jhong Hilario says he wants follow the footsteps of his 'idol' – his father, who is on his last term as Makati councilor

MANILA, Philippines – Dancer and television host Jhong Hilario is running for councilor in Makati under the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

This is was confirmed on Tuesday, October 13, with Rappler by Makati Councilor Marie Alethea Casal-Uy, who plans to run for re-election as well.

It’s Showtime host Hilario is the son of Councilor Virgilio Hilario Sr, who is on his last term.

ABS-CBNNews.com reported on Monday, October 12, that the younger Hilario plans to follow his father’s footsteps in 2016.

“Tapos na ang term niya (Hilario’s father) and ako kasi lumaki ako na nasa [politika] and daddy ko – 18 years siyang naging barangay captain at 9 years siyang naging councilor ng Makati – at never akong nakarinig na negative na sinasabi sa kanya,” Hilario told reporters during the press conference for the upcoming series, Walang Iwanan.

(My father’s term is ending, and I grew up with my daddy in politics. He was barangay captain for 18 years and councilor of Makati for 9 years – and I never heard anyone say anything negative about him.)

So habang lumalaki ako ay na-realize ko ang tao pala ay iba-iba. May mga taong nilikha para magsilbi sa mga tao (So while growing up, I learned that people were created differently. Some were made to serve people.)

‘Tough decision’

According to Hilario, it was a tough decision for him to run for public office, since he’s doing well in the entainment industry. Aside from a noontime show, he is also part of a television series, and does out-of-town shows and endorsements.

“Pero kasi since idol ko ang tatay ko talaga – at sa Showtime ay ganoon din ang ginagawa ko makatulong sa tao, maka-inspire sa tao – eh kailangan ko lang siguro ipagpatuloy kung ano ang nasimulan ng tatay ko,” Hilario said.

(But since my father is really my idol – and what I do in It’s Showtime is to help and inspire others – then I should continue what he started.)

Hilario added that his bid for a seat in the Makati city council does not necessarily mean he will be leaving show business.

Hilario is expected to file his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Wednesday, ahead of the other UNA candidates.

“He’ll be leaving for Cebu kasi kaya baka mauna siya eh (He’ll be leaving for Cebu so maybe he’ll file ahead of us),” said Casal-Uy.

She said UNA’s other candidates for councilors, who she did not name yet, plan to file their COCs together with whoever the party will be fielding for mayor.

However, UNA will likely finalize its slate for Makati by Friday, following the dismissal of suspended mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr.

Binay was expected to run for a third term but the latest order from the Ombudsman is forcing the Binay family to consider other options.  – Mara Cepeda/Rappler.com
