Metro cops arrest 74 for violating gun ban
Police Director Joel Pagdilao also reminds cops to observe Comelec guidelines in checkpoints

MANILA, Philippines – The police arrested 74 people in Metro Manila for violating the election gun ban, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Friday, January 22.

Seized from them during checkpoint operations were 34 firearms, a hand grenade, and 38 bladed weapons and ammunition, NCRPO chief Police Director Joel Pagdilao said in a statement.

The election gun ban started last January 10, as part of efforts to ensure safe and fair elections on May 9.

Under the ban, no person shall be allowed to bear, carry or transport firearms or deadly weapons outside of their residence or place of business, and in all public places.

Exempted from the gun ban are the police and armed forces, other law enforcement officials, and select government officials.

Pagdilao reminded cops to follow the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) guidelines covering checkpoints, which include the following: all checkpoint area must be well-lighted; the Comelec signboard must be visible, police officers manning the checkpoints should be led by an officer with a rank of at least Inspector. Police officers must also wear proper uniform, he stressed.

Pagdilao said only visual search is required at the checkpoint. No person may be subjected to a physical or body search in the absence of any reasonable grounds, he said.

“The public is not obliged to open their vehicles compartment, trunk or bags,” he added. – Rappler.com
