Marcos leads with votes from Ilocano, vote-rich areas

On the 2nd day of canvassing of votes for VP, Ferdinand Marcos Jr edges out Leni Robredo, his lead peaking at 1.9 million. Robredo's votes from Camarines Sur and Mindanao help narrow Marcos' lead.

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr edged out leading vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo on the second day of the official canvassing of votes for president and vice president on Thursday, May 26.

The independent bet, who accused Robredo’s camp of cheating in the elections, snatched the top spot by around 6 pm, and maintained his lead that peaked at 1.9 million over Robredo.

The difference of votes between the two tight contenders narrowed down, however, when votes from Camarines Sur and Mindanao came in later.

By the end of canvassing at 10 pm, Marcos’ vote count was at 13,214, 810 while Robredo’s was at 13,131,330. Marcos is now ahead by only 83,480 votes.

Votes from the “Solid North” provinces – known to have delivered to the Marcos clan – were canvassed on Thursday. Marcos got the most votes in Pangasinan, which is the most vote-rich among the provinces in the Ilocos Region:

  • Ilocos Norte – 298, 786
  • Ilocos Sur – 316, 121
  • La Union – 338, 455
  • Pangasinan – 832, 711

He also got significantly more votes over Robredo in northern Luzon provinces outside but near Ilocandia:

  • Isabela – 516, 926
  • Abra – 112, 694

Robredo only got 88,317 and 5,457 votes in these provinces, respectively.

The surge in Marcos’ numbers were also from certificates of canvass (COC) of vote-rich provinces that were audited on Thursday. Luzon provinces with a huge voting population delivered huge for him:

  • Cavite – 556, 785
  • Laguna – 441, 154
  • Bulacan – 556, 480
  • Pampanga – 434, 235

Robredo led the partial official vote count by 295,492 during the first day of canvassing on Wednesday, May 25, when 48 out of the 166 COCs were canvassed.

Undelivered COCs

Congress has yet to canvass 52 COCs after it accomplished 66 COCs on Thursday.

Four COCs – from Antique, Kuwait, Canada, and Iloilo City – have yet to be cleared by the canvassing committee.

In the case of Antique, there was a slight discrepancy between the votes recorded in the electronically-transmitted and physically-transmitted COCs.

Meanwhile, the COC from Kuwait is still held at the Bureau of Customs pending clearance for release.

The one coming from Canada is awaiting delivery.

Votes from Iloilo City have also been unaccounted as of Thursday since the ballot boxes from the area did not contain any COC.  Rappler.com
