Grace Poe tops presidential candidates in SWS poll
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Neophyte Senator Grace Poe topped another nationwide survey on voters' preference for president, edging out previous front runner Vice President Jejomar Binay.
The results of the Social Weather Stations' Second Quarter 2015 Social Weather Survey conducted from June 5 to 8, first reported in BusinessWorld, showed Poe at the lead with 42%, followed by Binay with 34%, and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II with 21%.
From the last survey period in March, Poe gained 11 percentage points, Binay lost 2 percentage points, while Roxas obtained an additional 6 percentage points.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was at fourth place with 20%, 5 percentage points higher than in March. Former president now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada came in at fifth with 7%, from 11% in March.
The others in the survey, which asked respondents to name 3 leaders they believe should succeed President Benigno Aquino III, are the following:
- Former senator and rehabilitation czar Panfilo Lacson: 7%
- Senator Francis Escudero: 4%
- Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago: 4%
- Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr: 3%
- Senator Alan Peter Cayetano: 2%
- Senator Loren Legarda: 1%
- Senator Antonio Trillanes IV: 1%
The nationwide survey was conducted among 1,200 adults.

In a statement on Friday, June 19, Poe said: "I am truly humbled by the latest SWS survey results. I am very grateful that more people appreciate the kind of public service that I strive to uphold – transparent, honest and efficient."
Responding to the latest survey results, the Office of the Vice President said in a statement on Friday, "Despite the relentless attacks from his opponents, Vice President Jejomar Binay is thankful for the unwavering support as reflected in the SWS survey."
It added: "The campaign continues to learn from the ground and adjust its efforts accordingly. The Vice President respects the survey results. He sees them as barometers of the pulse of the public at a point in time. He will continue to listen to the people."
Binay's ranking in polls on voters' preference for president, as well as his public trust and approval ratings, began to dip when the Senate started its probe into corruption allegations against him and his family in August last year.
Between the last survey conducted in March and the latest in June, the Commission on Audit froze 292 accounts belonging to Binay and personalities linked to him, based on an Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) report.
During the period, the Senate subcommittee that conducted hearings on the alleged overpriced Makati City Parking Building II recommended the filing of plunder charges against the Vice President and his son, Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. – Rappler.com
