Reelectionist Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas remains unopposed so far, and at least 3 congressional representatives are running for reelection

BATANGAS, Philippines –  Expressing her desire to continue the “unfinished business” of her father, slain Tanauan City Mayor Antonio HaliliMary Angeline “Sweet” Halili is running for the post in the 2019 elections.

Halili was among the first to file her certificate of candidacy at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Tanauan City on Thursday, October 11. She was accompanied by her entire slate and supporters who were all clad in white shirts.

“Si Daddy kasi maraming unfinished business ‘yan, and at the same time hindi ko kayang talikuran ang tao (Daddy has a lot ot unfinished business, and at the same time I can’t turn my back on the people),” she said.

Halili is running against Provincial Board Member Alfredo Corona, father of Jhana Corona Villamor, the vice mayor who replaced the father Halili after the latter was killed in a carefully planned assassination during a flag raising ceremony last July 2.

Laurel town politics

Meanwhile, in Laurel town, the suspended mayor, Randy James Amo, also filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for a seat in the provincial board.

Amo was recently found guilty of graft for withholding the salary and benefits of a local official not affiliated with his political party. The anti-graft court Sandiganbayan sentenced him to a minimum of 6 years imprisonment and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.

But according to Comelec Batangas, it is not in a position to reject any filing by aspirants to a post. There is a separate disqualification proceeding after all COCs are accepted by the poll body.

“We have a ministerial duty to accept COCs filed. It is our legal department that will determine if he will not be allowed to run,” said Batangas Acting Election Officer Erlinda Candy Orense.

Reelectionists

Also among those who filed their COCs on Monday were reelectionists:

  • Vilma Santos Recto, representative of the lone district of Lipa City
  • Ma Theresa V. Collantes, representative of the 3rd District of Batangas
  • Elenita R. Ermita Buhain, representative of the 1st District of Batangas
