Widow of slain La Union ex-congressman Eriguel seeks reelection

MANILA, Philippines – Sandra Eriguel, widow of slain former La Union congressman Eufranio “Franny” Eriguel, will seek reelection to the House of Representatives in 2019.

Eriguel filed her certificate of candidacy on Friday, October 12, hoping to grab, for the second time, the La Union 2nd district seat.

“Together with the friends and supporters of Franny, we the people of La Union would like to put an end to political violence and continue the legacy and good achievements of my husband,” Eriguel said.

Eriguel believes she should continue the legacy of her husband in their district, saying that locals admired him for his leadership and good governance.

Franny Eriguel was killed on May 12 while attending a barangay gathering in Agoo town when suspects onboard a black Mitsubishi Montero and a white Toyota Innova opened fire. The killing was immediately branded by his family and supporters as politically motivated.

The Philippine National Police has since then arrested a certain Felizardo Villanueva, alias “Rambo,” who ran as barangay captain in the 2018 village polls.

While Sandra is vying for another term in Congress, her daughter with Franny, Stefanie, is also seeking reelection for the mayor post of Agoo, La Union. – Rappler.com
