Agusan del Sur mayoral bet arrested over firearms
MANILA, Philippines – Authorities arrested on Saturday, May 11, a mayoral candidate in Agusan del Sur as well as 4 others in separate incidents in Caraga Region, as part of the campaign against loose firearms.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the Philippine National Police-Police Regional Office (PRO) 13 Caraga public information office said the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group arrested 40-year-old Jupiter Abulog, who is running for mayor in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur.
Judge Lou Nueva of Regional Trial Court Branch 7 in Bayugan City issued the search warrant against Abulog for violating Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Multiple firearms such as 6 caliber .45 pistols, one caliber .40 pistol, and one M16 rifle; several magazines and ammunition for these guns; and ammunition for a 5.56mm pistol were confiscated.
Meanwhile, in Tago, Surigao del Sur, 3 men were nabbed for attempted robbery and threats to a barangay chairman.
PRO 13 said authorities cornered Reynold Sinzo, 29, and Jonalito Tello, 27, both of Tago town, and Ronald Ruba, 18, of Butuan City in Barangay Anahao Bag-o.
The 3 were reportedly attempting to rob barangay chairman Hermilyn Silvoza Ugat of Barangay Anahao Daan and threatening his life.
Confiscated from the suspects were two caliber .45 pistols, 4 caliber .45 steel magazines, and several ammunition.
Finally, in Madrid, Surigao del Sur, police arrested 43-year-old Christopher Sullano also over loose firearms after serving a court-issued search warrant against him.
One caliber .45 pistol, 4 long aluminum magazines for caliber .45 with ammunition, 3 M16A1 rifle magazine with ammunition, and one Elisco M16A1 rifle with short aluminum magazine with ammunition were taken from Sullano. – Michael Bueza/Rappler.com
