Bingbong Crisologo votes after release
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Quezon City mayoral candidate Bingbong Crisologo was able to vote around 3:30 pm on Monday, May 13, after he was released by police.
Crisologo had been released after Assistant City Prosecutor Felomina Apostol Lopez found that his case needed further assessment through a preliminary investigation before she could decide on probable cause.
Released with Crisologo was his son Edrix Crisologo, as well as 44 supporters arrested at the alleged vote-buying site in Barangay Bahay Toro on Sunday, May 12.
After his release past 2 pm, Crisologo first headed to his residence, then to his polling precinct in Barangay Sta Cruz.
Crisologo was arrested at a house in Barangay Bahay Toro for allegedly obstructing justice as cops arrested his supporters who were accused of vote buying.
The mayoral candidate and incumbent Quezon City 1st District congressman denied the accusation, saying his supporters were merely preparing for their task as poll watchers.
Police arrested more than 40 of Crisologo's supporters, but seized only P800. They did not have a search warrant.
While in detention, Crisologo said he will sue cops for his "illegal arrest." He claimed that he was not read his rights or told about the cases he would face when police handcuffed him and took him into custody.
Crisologo is running for mayor under ruling party PDP-Laban, going up against incumbent Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, who is running with the Serbisyo sa Bayan Party. – Rappler.com
