Cerafica supporters protest Lino Cayetano’s win in Taguig City
Hundreds of Cerafica's supporters fill the street in front of Taguig City hall, calling for canvassers to make the ballots public

MANILA, Philippines – Just hours after the Taguig board of canvassers proclaimed Lino Cayetano as the new mayor of the city, supporters of opposing bet Arnel Cerafica stormed the streets to protest the result.

At around 9 pm on Tuesday, May 14, hundreds of Cerafica’s supporters went to the Taguig City hall, calling for canvassers to make the ballots public. Making ballots public, however, is an election offense as it violates the secrecy of the ballot.

A police barricade had been set up to secure the perimeter.

Based on partial and unofficial results from the Commission on Elections as of 8:44 pm Tuesday, Cayetano garnered 174,558 votes, while Cerafica got 110,746. Another candidate, Sonny Boy Andrade, got 1,361 votes.

Cayetano is the brother of former foreign affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who is also poised to win the congressional race as Taguig’s 1st district representative. (READ: Comelec junks petition vs Taguig bet Alan Peter Cayetano)
