Vice mayor edges out mayor, Batocabe widow in Daraga race
(UPDATED) Mayor Carlwyn Baldo was tagged as the mastermind in the killing of Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Rodel Batocabe

ALBAY, Philippines (UPDATED) – Daraga vice mayor Victor Perete has defeated detained mayor Carlwyn Baldo and the widow of Ako Bicol Rep. Rodel Batocabe in the town’s mayoral race.

Perete, who recently took over as acting mayor, secured 24,616 votes against Gertrudes Batocabe, who garnered 19,859 votes, and Baldo, with 16,564 votes.

Daraga had 75,413 registered voters, of whom 63,276 cast their votes.

For vice mayor, Perete’s running mate Jungie Jaucian led the polls, with 27,954 votes. Trailing behind were Baldo’s running mate Joey Marcellana, with 16,121 votes, and Gertrudes’ ally Joseph Espinas, with 13,675 votes.

Daraga town was placed under Commission on Elections control after the killing of third-term party-list representative Batocabe and his security escort at a gift-giving event in the town before Christmas last year.

Baldo, tagged as the mastermind, was charged with double murder and 6 counts of attempted murder. He surrendered to authorities on May 10.

Shortly after his proclamation on May 15, Wednesday, Perete offered peace to his opponents and laid out his plans for Daraga. He said that he will prioritize programs addressing water supply, traffic, and garbage problems in the town. – Rappler.com
