Princess Tarhata Alonto Lucman, the first Muslim female governor of Lanao del Sur, has died.

Bangsamoro Parliament member Zia Alonto Adiong confirmed this in a Facebook post as he paid tribute to his grand aunt on Friday, February 26.

“Her absence will be deeply felt not only within our family but within the communities that benefitted from her wisdom and strength,” Adiong wrote.

He added, “May Allah grant this remarkable woman a place in paradise, an inspiring figure who dedicated her entire life to the people, to the service of a cause greater than wealth and power, whose love embraced the less among us and gave meaning to what truly is a Bangsamoro woman as we continue on asserting our rightful place in the larger Filipino society.”

For opposing Martial Law and standing up to Ferdinand Marcos’ attempt to stay longer in power, “she would eventually be unceremoniously removed from her position by the dictatorship, and found herself exiled with her family in Saudi Arabia,” Adiong said.

In a separate Facebook post, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin Hataman also mourned Lucman’s passing.

“Her passing on is mourned not just by her family but by her people – us. She was of a generation that none of us will ever have the opportunity of being compared to,” Hataman wrote.

“But while all these feats belong to their generation, hers stood taller. For she did all, equally, as the lone woman, alongside the men of  her time. May we be worthy of the doors you opened for us. May Allah swt accept your good deeds,” she added.

Aside from being the first Muslim female governor of Lanao del Sur, Lucman was also known as a rido (clan conflict) settler who helped resolve rido cases long after she had retired from politics.

An advocate for peace and development, Lucman also helped in the release of kidnapped nuns and an American Protestant missionary in Marawi City in 1986.

“Islam is peace,” Lucman was quoted in the 2004 Newsbreak article “Women Who Dare.” “This is because our prophet is a trader. You can’t trade if there is war.”

Lucman is the daughter of former senator Sultan Alauya Alonto, and the wife of former Lanao del Sur congressman Rashid Lucman. – Rappler.com
