Manila City is one step closer to ending gender discrimination in its territory.
On Wednesday, October 29, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno signed Ordinance No. 8695 or the Manila LGBTQI Protection Ordinance of 2020.
The ordinance banned discrimination on the basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE).
With the ordinance, the capital joins Quezon City as well as a few other local government units in punishing prejudice in their areas.
In a statement, Moreno said it was only the beginning.
In this Rappler Talk, Rappler’s reporter covering Manila, Rambo Talabong, speaks with Manila Tourism, Culture, and Arts Office Director Charlie Duñgo, who was one of the officials who made the ordinance possible.
He recounts how the ordinance met resistance and their strategy to win over supporters for a more inclusive Manila.
